Stacking the fruit was a never ending job. Every piece of fruit had a square of tissue paper under it. We kids were paid threepence per pound to straighten the bits out into stacks to save dad doing it. We also got to use the surplus paper in the toilet which was kept behind the toilet door in a specially made hessian bag. Of course this loo was outside and down the path. there were always spiders there and frightened the living daylights out of us at night.

I don’t think it all fell down but they were all watched. There were signs that said please don’t touch the fruit

Oh do you think so I thought he looked a bit like Damian
